Playing with layers
There are thousands of great free sites with texture JPGs in the net. I have downloaded some neutral ones with wood, stone and metal surfaces and played a bit with them.
The idea is always the same. Take a normal photo, put a texture as a second layer over it. Make the texture fit the size of the photo and than change the layer fill method and its intensity to get some interesting effect.
If one layer is not enough add a second one. It costs just a bit of time.
There are so many possible combinations that it is difficult to give any tips but some of the results look cool (at least for me)

Dosn't that look like a photo Daguerre has done himself ?

rather grey and a bit boring

Here i have changed some details in the photo as well to make the motif fit the effect

Its fun to go out and take photos of your own textures aswell, try just added them to part of the image such as the sky for a different effect, like you said "There are so many possible combinations"

Good idea to add a texture only to parts of a photo. Must give that a try
Thanks for the tip

Nice one Uwe. I don't use them at all. It's always nice to know they are there though and for anyone who would like to try. Perhaps a rainy day project.
Thanks for sharing matey.
