Little white diffuser sock (Fujifilm FinePix HS20 EXR Flash) *Updated*

Little white diffuser sock (Fujifilm FinePix HS20 EXR Flash) *Updated*

I hope you find this information/article handy, but please remember flashguns are very good and allow you to create even better photographs, but I agree that the current price for Fujifilm's EF flashguns is far too much for me to pay out at this time, and I don't want to risk frying my camera by using a third party flashgun (obviously would not be covered under warranty)

Before reading the main article below, please check out these two photo examples taken with my HS20 and the little white diffuser so you can see what your built in flash can achieve.

Lizard shot using aperture mode and the little white diffuser sock.

Moth shot using aperture mode and the little white diffuser sock.

So here is my idea as a temporary measure until I get a flashgun for my HS20.

I decided to write this after I noticed a HS20 owner, was unhappy with the built in flash, and also with the price of Fujifilm's flashguns, but was worried that off market flashguns would fry the wiring in his HS20.

I purchased my Fujifilm FinePix HS20 EXR this week, and the night I bought it I tested the built in flash, and was rather pleased with the power of the flash, but obviously the harshness of the light was an issue. I then decided to get some thin white cloth, and cut out a tiny circle similar in size to a matchbox, I then tested it by attaching it using an elastic band to my HS20's built in flash. I took a few test photos and was very very pleased with the results.

I have since made a more eye pleasing version of my mini diffuser sock, by folding back some cloth and sticking some elastic into it.

I hope this idea helps any other photographers out there, as I imagine you can make a mini diffuser sock for just about any cameras built in flash.

P.S someone requested to see my little white sock, so here is a photo showing the first version using elastic band, and then the second version where I folded the fabric back and stitched it.

I hope this helps.

I use all and any flashguns with my HS10 and HS20.

I bought a "Wein" safe sync, to safe sync hot shoe fitting, on Ebay for £25 pre used, and worring about what goes into the hot shoe is a thing of the past. It drops everything to around 6 volts. My old Vivitars, 283,  285 and 285hv included.

I also use a trigger with the Wein, to receivers on my studio lights, and again, I have no problems.

A problem is only waiting for a solution, and I suppose there are many Smile
