Portishead Red arrow display
Portishead have a yearly carnavil and there opening event was the red arrows on friday 14th June 2012. Being only a 20 minute drive away on the M5 thought i could get there see the display and be home in time to watch England V Sweden in the euros

The Lake Grounds area is a beautiful spot to relax. Built around an artificial lake and running alongside the esplanade, this is the town’s main recreation ground and conservation area. As well as the lake, there is a children’s playground and paddling pool, tennis courts and bowls and, during the summer, rowing boats are available for hire. This is a popular place too for model boat enthusiasts, who can often be seen sailing remote-controlled boats across the lake. The Lake Grounds has a car park and tea-rooms
first sight was a family of swans

soooooooooooo cute

the swans are off to watch the display too

i use aperture control mainly now so time for a test shot of the sky still a hour to wait

lots of stalls along the front thought i would have a go

bit hard to throw balls with a HS 20 round my neck so i lent the camera to the boss for these shot

Portishead is only a few miles from weston super mare and you can see newport across the Bristol channel

where to get the best view so seeing a ITV westcountry news camera around i thought they must be in the know so plonked myself on the wall by there van

crowds building up now

rescue lifeboat takes it place in the chanel pleased to say it was not needed

itv camera now shoving a camera in my face so i do the same lol i was not on the news thu

here they come

begining to realise the different brightness of the sky along the coast was making getting decent shots hard

shame i missed the top plane

has the recession hit the red arrows too notice the new team member in this shot

they got really close here

one last fly past

then they dissappear into the sky
a great 20 minute display well worth getting stuck in traffic on the way home but thanks to the bad weather in Poland i got home at 7.50pm in time for the kick off to see England beat Sweden

Good blog. It can be hard to get the exposure right against cloudy sky, so you did a pretty good job. If you find the planes are coming out a little dark, dial in a step or two of positive Exposure Correction (EV +/-). It will make the sky really bright, but should give better results on the aircraft (had to do this for some of my Sunderland Airshow blog pics). Just make sure to reset the EV value if the sky clears or once you've finished, otherwise you'll end up wondering why all your future shots come out over exposed!.

Great blog Nigel, its a pity there are still only seven in the display team after the sad events of last year.
Still well worth seeing though. Well Done.

A job well done, Nigel - not easy at all with the variations of light and background. Sorry to see only 7 in the team but glad to see all nine in the Jubilee flypast. Well done and thanks.
Best regards, Steve

Hi Nigel. Haven't missed your blog, wouldn't dare...LOL!! Been up since 7am catching up on commenting on all the photoblogs posted from last week while I was in York with Viv. (Thanks for your lovely comment) It will take me ages to catch up and Geoff and myself go on our sunny jolly hols again soon (if I make it this time..LOL!!) Brill blog and looks like you two had a great time. You're certainly getting around a bit and visiting loads of places together. Good for you two too. You deserve it. Tell the BOSS that I liked the action shot capturing the ball in mid air. Thanks for sharing another day out. When's the next one? LOL!!

I know the feeling trying to get that perfect capture of planes against an ever changing sky having just spent a weekend in Cleethorpes for their first Festival of Flight. I run some of mine through a program called Machinery suggest on this site a few months ago by Howard.
You've done a great job.

Anne

Good stuff Nigel, always good to see the Red Arrows in display and you've done well with this. Gone shots of before as well.
My Berlin blogs have finally been finished by the way - final one added earlier tonight was the Tierpark Zoo if you want to take a look.
