Madeiran Flower Festival 2012
The recent Flower Festival in Madeira was one of the loveliest experiences of my life, I took over 650 photos, so it is hard to select just a few to share with you, but here goes.... this is one of the real flower pictures on show.
The market was full of exotic blooms.
The pavements were decorated with masses of flower heads in gorgeous patterns.
There was a fabulous display of orchids.
I took loads of shots, hard to pick just a few !
Folk dancers and musicians to entertain.
As you can see from this first shot of the parade, the streets of Funchal were packed tight with thousands of people. We could have found a spot right next to the road side at the barriers, but that would have meant standing in the hot sun for two and a half hours before the parade even started.........
...........so we found a wall to sit on, and I used my HS10 to zoom in over everyone's heads.
Ballet dancers on this one.
There were not as many floats in the parade as I had imagined, but hundreds of dancing children and adults in fabulous costumes all doing routines to music. These were some of the lucky ones getting a ride!
The crowds were all along the cliff tops right down to pavement level.
I could have done with a step ladder to capture more of the procession of dancers.
I like her style.
By the time the parade reached us it had been going for an hour and a half!
They were so energetic.
Thirsty work, being a flower!
I wonder if this tot will remember her big day.
I bet these three will.
I love this shot.
A National costume float.
Traditional Madeiran embroidery
Hope you are still awake!!
By this time, I was flagging, and I was sitting down. I can't imagine how exhausted the dancers were, especially all the children.
Please excuse the bald heads, damned tourists, always in the way.
A floral vision!
Just imagine all the costumes that had to be made, and all the dance routines practised, the mind boggles.
Looks like this group were at the end of their tether, it's all a bit too much for the girl at the back, poor thing. At this stage, I know how she feels.
Two hours later and the final float comes into view!
What do you mean, Thank God!
I apologise to the hundreds of beautiful children in lovely costumes that I have not put on here. Hard to believe, but this is only a "small" selection.
I hope you enjoyed the photos and felt some of the sunshine coming through. Thanks for taking the time to look. Jane x
