Meet Arty *UPDATED Sunday Feb. 5, 2012* "First Night in the Apartment"

This is Arty and his kitty "Champion MiMi Mae Ling"...cuz ya know she's a champion. Arty just graduated from University and is a musician. He plays the piano, the bassoon and the violin or is it the viola...well one or the other...perhaps both...and oh yeah the bass guitar and trumpet. He is currently unemployed and living off his parents.

Arty is a pretty laid back guy and he loves a good cup of coffee.

He also loves to play with MiMi Mae Ling.

Arty doesn't drive and he never learned to ride a bicycle so he generally walks or rides his giant tricycle. He plans to get a basket for his tricycle so MiMi Mae Ling can come along.

Arty is a pretty keen amateur photographer. He shoots with a Fuji S2800...

But he would love to get his hands on one of these if he could afford it.

When he is not looking for work or practicing, he spends a lot of time texting and talking with friends and checking email and facebook. He loves his smart phone because for him it is just like a laptop and he can even check what's going on at MyFinePix but he is not a member. He is too shy to join.

Arty also enjoys a good read now and then.

He recently moved to the Big City in hopes of launching his career. This is his first apartment and it overlooks a seafood market...MiMi Mae Ling just loves that!

Arty has a lot to do to fix up his new apartment and since it is Saturday he's off to shop for a few things he needs, but first he will have a good breakfast at his parent's house because he hasn't got any food in his apartment.

Arty had a long day moving more boxes from his parent's house into his new apartment in the Big City. He wanted to go to bed early because he is having a few friends over to watch the Giants in Super Bowl vs. the Patriots...but he doesn't have a TV and the cable is not hooked up.

He doesn't have a bed or any bed linens yet so he had to sleep on the floor using one of his rugs as a blanket because there is something wrong with the heat and his apartment is freezing. MiMi Mae Ling was very puzzled by all this. Arty also discovered he needs some room darkening shades because there is a sports bar across the street with bright neon lights that shine right in through his windows. It is going to be a loooong night.

Almost 2AM and Arty was finally able to fall asleep.

8:15 came a bit too quick for Arty but MiMi needs to eat. It is a gray day outside today but it is also Super Bowl Sunday and Arty is going to have his first party in his new apartment tonight...but he needs to find a TV and see about the cable.

To Be Continued...

funny and a good manual of lighting and composition.

Do you know LightingSetup? It is a little psd for photoshop by Kevin Kertz, for making diagrams of lighting.

For example.

Thanks Pablo.  I have used charts back in my analogue days but haven't used the computer based ones.  When I do document the set up I usually just take a photo of it...I really should make the more accurate charts but I've gotten lazy.  Thanks for the info.

I should add that the above, with the exception of the one with the book,  were done with natural light or a single desk lamp and some black and white foam core boars.  The one with the book may have been done in a light tent but it was quite a while ago and I don't recall what I did for that one.  None of these are really "serious" images but were mostly fun images I made to demonstrate that while having fancy gear is nice and is good for big projects the low tech tools work fine for small stuff and experimentation.  You can learn a lot when shooting small things like this using low-tech lighting.

Like it! Witty, true to life observation/experience.  And as frustrating as it can be at tmes, I can only blame myself and their father for having some arty traits of our own, as to why I have two fairly grown grown Arties at home with me stil! lol!

Love it Laurie!! My, what some folk get up to whilst others are sleeping, can't wait for the next episode!

I wonder if your lad will think, well he takes a peek here, mmm I recognise that person!!

It really shows off your lighting skills as an experienced studio photographer too. Brilliant, so thank you for putting it together and I've loved reading so keep them coming, haven't read a good book in ages!

Thanks everyone.  I'm so glad you all like this.  It's a lot of fun.  Arty is planning a Super Bowl Party tomorrow...at least that's what he told me.  So Monday there may be another episode.

Arty has many traits and is not modeled after any one of my kids but a little bit of all three of them and other people as well.  My oldest thinks I'm crazy but he could help but to smile when he saw what I was doing.

I will update Arty's status regularly and see how long I can keep this going....cuz it's just so much fun!

Hi Laurie.

You didn't mention if Arty's parents were paying for said apartment or not  Wink

What do you think his busking skills will be like ?

Will he have to have his instruments shipped everywhere by The Teamsters ?

There is so much about American life I don't understand or know about.

Hope the next episode is soon Smile

For Ian (Wanilson) The lighting for the majority of these consisted fo a single adjustable desk lamp a 60 watt bulb, some foam core board (black and white) and lots of observation. Smile

Ray...I did mention that he is living off his parents...even though he just moved to the Big City...Moving the piano was difficult.  The other instruments are still packed away.  He will have lots of unpacking to do.  But the Super Bowl Party is tomorrow so he will be busy.

I'm not sure about the busking yet.  He has yet to try it in the Big City but he will probably have to.  I hear the subway platforms are good acoustically.  lol

I don't know enough about lighting to be a able to say anything other than I think it's really well done. Loved the idea and especially the seated figure watching the LCD screen. Engaging and amusing.

Oh NO!!!!  Not again....This is going to put folk off doing photoblogs.  I thought all the gremlins had been dealt with.  It must be bloody annoying for you Laurie.  Anyway, to cheer you up a bit, Daz has your "card" and Dave should get his in the morning, thanks for doing that, you are a sweetheart. XXX

I hope all your photos come back.  When they do, let me know please.
