Highland Cattle of Shawford Down
Submitted by mike_k on Wed, 10/11/2010 - 20:29
Shawford Down is just to the south of Winchester, Hampshire, UK and overlooks the Itchen River valley. Great place for a walk and last time I was there a sign warned of cattle grazing. Okay, so was expecting the usual black, white ordinary type cows - but no, they have a small herd of Highland cattle wandering around. So here are a few pictures.

Here's a view looking south over the valley.

Just relaxing.

They are very docile and easy to get close.

Into the sun.....

Something to grab onto while bull jumping !

Looking at you looking at me....

Looks like it's about to charge but as said previously they are very docile. At least when I've been there !

This cattle business is hard work.

Hiyah Mike
Well go to the top of the class. Great homework!! Haha
Perhaps a little repetitive, but they are good shots. For a first photoblog, great and thanks for posting.
Cheers

Photogenic cattle, whatever next!
There are quite a few heathland areas where 'old breeds' (cattle and pigs) are being re-introduced to maintain the landscape, it's good to see it in action, well done!

They are so furry...not like what I am used to seeing. Very cool blog. They do look pretty tame and cuddly despite those impressive horns.

For a first blog that's very good indeed Mike.
Your pics reminded me of our trip to Mull a few years back. The roads there are pretty much all single track, no fences, and we rounded one corner to be faced with one of those beasties stood right in the middle of the road.
Wouldn't budge, just stood there looking at us as if to say 'what are you doing on MY read?" Good job I was in a Landrover and could go round it or we'd have been there all day.

Nicely captured photographs. I think the colour and texture of the coats comes across really well in your photos. An excellent blog.

Nice shots. Not so sure about them being cuddly as some have suggested, to me their horns have always looked like they are intended for offensive action rather than defensive. Congratulations on your first blog.

Well done, Mike. But you won't get me in a field with cows.
