Search for Red Squirrels
A short blog about my failed and then successful forays to get some photos of Red Squirrels
we have a thriving Red Squirrel population around Oban and i have no idea why i didn't go out looking for them before. it's easy enough to get photos of them at bird feeders and eating peanuts in peoples gardens, but i wanted to get some in the squirrels natural habitat
I hope you enjoy them.......

Day 1
One of the best areas to see them is around Dunollie woods, this is the Dog Stone and Dunollie Castle in the background

the trail up into the woods

some interesting old trees up in the wood, the area is known locally as 'The Witches' and is reputed to be haunted

and then there was a streak of red in the distance.....

and he didn't stop going till he was out of sight, day one down the drain on the squirrel front.......

so took a few photos of other things......
the obligatory fungi macro shot

liked this splash of colour

and for some reason this pine cone, then it was off home for a cuppa

Day 2
back up the hill into the woods, armed with a pocket full of peanuts

took a different trail up than the day before to loop round to where i'd spotted him.....

hadn't got any where near the spot when this little guy exploded up a tree about 10feet away from me

and boy what a telling off he gave me lol! he didn't stop chattering till i threw out some peanuts.......

that made him pause and give me time to get a few shots

and with that i thought it was enough and left him to it

and just to finish a sunset behind the Dog Stone
well i hope you enjoyed the photos as much as i enjoyed taking them

A very nice blog Wullie. You certainly found a friendly squirrel there. Well done on some good images. Thanks for posting. I have seen red squirrels when I've been up in Scotland but never been quick enough to get a shot of them.

Nice little blog Wullie.
We were on a campsite in France this year when a red squirrel came right outside our caravan. My wife was yelling at me to take some photos but I was in the shower at the time. Now, shes no photographer but managed to get a couple of half decent shots with me yelling out instructions through the bathroom window.
It was quite funny and a rare chance for us because we don't get them ,at all, down here.
Thanks for sharing this with us....I'll take some peanuts with us next time.

Great stuff, clearly peanuts are the secret weapon! Good to see the other shots of the area as well, though.
