This is a very atmospheric image and I love the colours. I'm just not sure about the coconut... it's clearly been added afterwards, and its a bit too big in proportion to the rest of the image.

Hello Rosemary. Thank you so much for your comments. I showed this picture, saved on my camera to some friends at the art gallery, today.. None could make out at first glance, and some asked if it was superimposed or otherwise. I liked that.."a doubt". I have a couple images of this particular "coconut" that has been floating and washed ashore around this bay, at different times of the day..All taken "as is, where is"

It does look as if it's been added post-production so it's even more impressive if it isn't! Can't see the crab though, I thought the nut may have fallen on it

Thank you Dave. It's an original shot, uploaded right from the camera without any editing, imaging or add on. That's a compliment from you then. Oh no, the crab is fine...its a little foot or two behind the coconut. This is the view as seen and captured through "the eyes of the crab", the beholder...crab's eye view. Cheers!

What a load of BULL.....
the coconut has definatly been added as we all know afterwards, so come on and admit that you've been caught out.
The image would have been perfect if you hadn't shopped the stupid COCONUT!
you can't kid a kidder...............

Thank you Leslie for your comment. It's good to question if one doubts something, but one can't categorically establish that as a fact without any basis. .
Why would any one in the right frame of mind, submit a competition entry" a load of bull", which is judged by the moderators (FUJIFILM UK LTD), posted for public viewing and subject oneself to be crucified and have one's proven credibility and reputation ( not in photography yet), flushed down the drain, just for "shopping a stupid coconut"?
Masterpieces are created by the eyes of the beholder. An artist perceives quite differently and has his / her own reality world, in creating, composing and presenting. You become the beholder. For the real artist, there is no cheating on oneself, just like in calligraphy, music, golf, or in life.
In all sincerity, I take this "doubt' which is your birthright, as a great compliment. Thank you.

well if that coconut was not added on it was one hell of a nut......i dread to think what size the flipping tree was that is came of, and if it's a crabs view of the world, how come the coconut is so gigantic but the scenery so tiny, what's that old saying, you can fool some of the people, all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time....
Reply to comment
ps.....i did look at the shot blown up, and you can see a line to the bottom of the 'nut' to the left side and just under, it's not a shadow, very indicative of being 'added'. don't get me wrong, have no prob with that but honesty is best, you prob have a very good chance of winning all things considered.....
Reply to comment
Nice composition but I agree that the evidence does seem to show a disparity in the pixilation and also evidence of air brushing on bottom and bottom left of nut.

Hello Annie and Wullie Rodger. Thank you for your comments, and you have both touched on the concept of honesty. The contents are noted and I respect your views, though independence of thought and rationale is the essence.
Photography is an art and can be very subjective. The "truth" never hurts, and because this is a competition, the only people at this juncture who can verify the authenticity and validity of this image are the team from Fuji Film Uk. They are the experts in this field. Do you think anyone can fool this team?
Reuters and National Geographic have admitted on some occasions of fraudulent shots in their photography. Unfortunately that shall not be in my case. There is a Chinese saying, " If your conscience is clear, do not fear on knock on your door after midnight"
Winnie, I like what you said by saying..." you probably have a good chance of winning, all things considered". Yes, this image is from the camera, to the PC and on to FinePix. The image holds all the physical properties. I have running images too.
WullieRodger, what you see in its purest form, is the very image that will earn me an eventual "like" from you.
I enjoy the participation, it inspires a novice like me and winning is secondary. Defeat is something that must be accepted, rather than to be ashamed of victory. I like to take pride in being a winner.

Just because this doesn't seem to fit perspectively does not mean that this image isn't exactly as Huang Poh Lo says it is. This is not what we in Britain would understand as a coconut, but is actually a seed from the Coco de Mer and is indeed huge. They are palm like trees that grow near the sea and drop their huge seeds into the water where they float around until washed ashore. As for the shadow issue - if you look at the exif this photo has been taken with a flash which would explain why the shadow falls as it does, and the coco nut is lit from the front even though the sun is behind it. Looking closely I do not believe that this has been photoshopped, though I know there will be plenty who do not agree with me. So I for one say Well Done Huang Poh Lo on a very pleasing image.

If it was taken using a flash then that would give it the starkness and sharp outline that makes it look like it's been added later. You say you have other shots of the coconut so why not put one here or in your gallery to show other views of it.

Greetings to all. Thank you Mr. Benjamin, Southern Girl, Mr. Stuart Dunlop, Birbee. Against my will, I have uploaded another two images, taken in sequence. The image above ( competition entry) was taken on 18.9.2022 at 6.03 pm. The second image in my gallery, was taken on same date at 6.36pm. The third image, was taken at sunrise at 8.08 am. For those in doubt about "crabs and coconuts" you could have a good view here. This particular "coconut" has not left the bay, for sometime, but lies in different parts of the beach, depending on the tide. I have yet, many other images.
Yesterday, I sent a mail to the moderators of this site and competition, to make their stand, as some statements could be defamatory.. I don't have photoshop nor coral draw, nor any other applications to enhance these images. They are from the camera to the computer, and then uploaded into this site. ZERO ADULTRATION.. I have told Fine Pix, the problem lies in being a professional artist ( in my field) using a good compact camera ( JV 200- Low priced). My credential are of least value here, but one must have or be in authority to dispute the validity or authenticity of any image.
I am enjoying my sunset years, added a hobby and have entered this competition in good faith, for fun. I like the participation and the competition but if one feels that this a "fraudulent " representation, then he or she must report me in to FinePix, or prove me wrong in any court of law, or for some, you can even wager ( your call ). That's fine with me.
Thank you for the support. It's very welcoming! I shall, after this competition is over make all these statements public, without prejudice and without mention of names. The art fraternity would be amused as I have a large worldwide following.

I don't lick my toes in the bath, nor do I lick coconuts - don't like the taste! Composition-wise, this might have been better with the coconut placed a little to the right, whether by picking it up and putting it down again or otherwise matters not. I remember the Lone Pine in Penang island - was this near there? (I was there in the fifties and sixties, so it may have changed a bit!) Whether your photo has been manipulated is open to debate, but your "name" does look a bit contrived, Marco?

Hello Pineapple Joe. To the Japanese, Koreans and Chinese, the Bamboo is all reflective of their culture. It has multiple uses. Likewise, the Coconut palm and fruits provide the same to people living in the tropics. From the trunk, to leaves, husk, kernel, and water. I forgot to mention, if one likes "TODDY" you don't have to brew alcohol nor need a licence. Its straight out of the young flowering shoots, tied tightly, shaved, and allowed to ooze into a jug ( where it ferments) and its happy hours for Pineapple Joe. You seem very popular and I am very positive, your comments, though I cant quite comprehend, are of good intent!

Hello and thank you Mr. George Haddock. Penang has always been a beautiful place. Yes, during the fifties /sixties, it was still the colonial era. We, the siblings all have fond memories of that time as my dad, from Sri Lanka was a planter in the rubber estates, and worked with a British company here for 33 years, yes all his life. I am first generation. All of us were born in the estates, and later schooled in the towns, then.
This picture was taken in Sabah, East Malaysia, with a very long coastline. I live close to the sea in the countryside. I have procrastinated getting a camera all my life, as I have always been afraid of technicalities. In school, I won 2nd prize in a photo competition, when I was 15. I used a borrowed RM 12 camera. Dropped out after getting electrocuted in the darkroom. The rest, history. So now, here I am, pursuing a childhood dream, with all the controversies. Yes, any subject is debatable, and I have written to FinePix and am awaiting a response. My approach is passive and non-confrontational. If you look at my gallery, all the picture are directly out of the camera. I would want to keep it this way. I Somehow like things in its purest, unadulterated form, though one has to accept the digital age. I have this lateral thinking for my art and music too.
As for my name, my birth name is N.Poolohgasingam as in my profile. In short, I have always been called N.Polo. As I am an Indian, and a professional Chinese Calligrapher, N.Polo in Chinese would translate into Huang Poh Lo. My faceBook account is also under the same name.I have my art, signed off under such all over the world. I have written for hundreds of people from England as I am normally positioned at 5 star hotels or rated complexes. I do Islamic Calligraphy as well, but sign off with a Chinese seal.
Sabah is known as the Land Below The Wind. I am known as N.Polo -The Man Below The Wind, just for my songwriting and charity work on a regular basis. I am no more in the fast lane, and I find this name very apt. Now, I am learning to live life to the fullest by being cheerful ( not all that easy), being contented and caring for others and raising my 18 year old brat, who has absolutely zero interest in whatever that I do...ha ha. A fine rascal otherwise!
Sorry for this pseudo historical account. It just came off the cuff. I have no skeletons in the closet and I can rend my chest open, being the least perfect amongst most beings.
Thank you once again Mr. Haddock. Life is a gift and a joy and happiness is the only way to live it.

Just show how big the Coco de Mer nut is. I bought this half of one in the Seychelles a very long time ago. The Coco de Mer is the largest coconut in the world, and I am sure there are larger ones than this one. This one was bought on the island of Pralin, The forest where they grow is known as the garden of eden, as it is the shape of a womens pelvis. The cup is actually touching it.
Apart from that, I think your photo is lovely. Pam.

Thankyou for the multilingual explanation of your name, N.Polo. I must admit that I thought you had adopted the name from the famous explorer, Marco Polo - many people have "pen names" on this site! We lazy westerners usually use just a first name with friends - "Mr." is thought to be a bit formal and old fashioned these days. I look forward to more of your pictures - and your philosophical thoughts to go with them!

Hello Jean, you are enjoying life to the fullest and I am sure the camera ( from a quick glance at your gallery) is giving you instantaneous gratification. To capture a moment in time and be able to share, is a wonderful joy, that cannot be expressed in words and age is no barrier.
The awakening of creativity is when you produce something different. It's fair to have an opinion or debate on it but there must be a basis and such must be made of sterner stuff. Thank you for your kind words, and I have surely made many friends through this image. That itself, is my reward and baptism.

Thank you for your comment, which is respected. This is a technical issue and I am zero in that area. Any attempt to rebut will only lead things to go in semi-circles. I am in correspondence with Fuji UK and Fuji Malaysia. As a governing body for this competition, a stand has to come from Fuji. This validation has been my request, and I expect that to be forthcoming. It's a legal and moral obligation for Fuji to fulfill, from my point of view.
This entry was submitted on the 22.9.2011. I can imagine the build up it would have had, had it been earlier.

Greetings, mate! There be one or three rather rude punters that have had their buttons pressed by your photo. The use of flash has created the shadow that has been mentioned. And f3.1 on a point and shoot (as against a DSLR) will probably have a large DOF.
Assume nothing, I say. Also much respect for your stance. You appear to have mastered 'taking nothing personally'. Not easy. In a bit...

Hello there Crowley. You really have some great pieces out there.
Thank you. It has been a subtle approach without grinding one's fist. I am only awaiting a validation from Fuji. If it comes , well then good, if not, I will take this to the next level, with Fuji, as it is the governing body of this competition.

Hi Huang Poh Lo,
I like some when first looked at it thought it had been edited but after looking at your other coconut photo's and copy and merging them I think you are the greatest photoshoper the world has ever seen and should travel the world showing us your techniques.
If this is photoshopped then the one taken at sunset is shopped as well, as the trees and horizons match.
