In 1809, Englishman Sir Humphry Davy discovered that when two pieces of charcoal, connected to the terminals of a battery, are brought close together a bright arc appears in the resulting vaporised carbon between them.

I have no idea how you did it, but it's simply wonderful!

P.S. have decided not to use the star rating system, it doesn't do anyone any justice. Makes people big

A really excellent image. It's amazing what we can come up with using a bit of imagination. I would never have thought of this concept, and I can guess that a number of us will be going away and trying to duplicate this shot. This deserves wider recognition, I would surely place it in the top three, but we shall see at the end of the competition if anyone else agrees with that. Good luck.

Oh and another thing. It should be on the scrolling page at the very least. Would give it another five stars if I could.

Wow, many thanks all for comments. In answer to Barry's comment about whether it was photoshopped - well though I was quite happy with it as it was, I couldn't resist GIMPing it a very little to try and bring out the detail and colour but nothing more - trying to make it brighter and more colourful made it noisier. Most of the time on it was spent trying to get the arclamp demo setup producing some nice arcs (most of the time it only arcs when the pencils are moved - it is difficult to get it arcing long enough without moving the pencils to get a pic) and then trying to figure out lighting and exposure.

Thanks Conrad for the explanation, maybe turning the voltage off and on in quick succession may have kept the arc going , good work
