Photometry..Should i use Multi or Average
Submitted by MissEmilyHoward on Thu, 31/05/2012 - 19:57
Hello All,
i am sure this applies to most S series cameras, mine being a S1800,but i was wondering what the difference is between Multi and Average when setting the exposure metering option.
I understand the principal of Spot or Average so the camera knows what part of the scene to base its exposure on,but what is Multi ? ie how is it different to Average ?
Look forward to your thoughts and advice.
Regards
Pete

According to the manual, multi exposure is based on the type of scene, so a beach scene would receive a different exposure assessment than if Spot or Average was used. This method of assessing exposure isn't infallible as the camera can sometimes be fooled by the lighting conditions. For unusual lighting conditions it may be better to take more than one exposure using a different EV.
For scenes like landscapes, the Average method usually works pretty well.

In Photometry, on the S series, as Salvador said; if ye choose Multi then the camera simply uses the SR Auto function of scene recognition.
If ye choose Avg. then the setting is the average exposure for the whole frame. This'll give consistent exposure over many shots. Most effective in landscape but also in portraits where clothing is mostly black or white. Ah use Avg. most of the time.
Ah'd suggest ye use single and not continuous AF.
Combining Photometry with AF Mode, ah use Multi (in AF), allowing the camera tae choose the high-contrast areas near the centre. If the focus frame doesn't show (two brackets [ ]), then use Center +Focus lock.
If ye use a tripod, use Area as ye can then move the focus point around in the frame.
Ye need tae have Intelligent face detection OFF tae change these settings.
