New Finepix X100 Dead after first charge.

Just got my X100 today, was working fine out of the box but when the battery suddenly died and then charged it, the camera would no longer power up. Upon turning it on the shutter moves a little and then nothing. Help

Have you charged the battery long enough? Do refer to the recommended charging duration. And don't overcharge it either.

I didn't know that you could over charge. I will have to look this up for my camera too.

The battery normally comes not charged .

If you used it in the body before charging you may have reversed a cell within the battery.

Battery could be completely dead as once that happens it's not a reversible process .

You chould not be able to overcharge the battery with the supplied charger .

Well when put in the battery straight out of the box the camera said it had full charge, and did of course put the battery in correctly. The battery probably hasn't been broken by me as  i can still use it to power the camera if its plugged into my pc via usb, but this is the only thing can get the camera to do apart from starting it while holding back to launch firmware update. And ues its the latest firmware Sad

Do have a look here for some info on Li-on batteries:

I thought all Li-Ion batteries came uncharged as once activated they do not keep an indefinite discharge rate and a camera could be left unsold for a number of months or years. The camera with battery I recently received was definitely not charged nor was the extra backup battery .

The camera manufacturers chargers are normally very expensive and safe to use . To date I've never overcharged a battery and mine have been on the go for over four years now and used regularly . If one packed up tomorrow I would have felt I'd had a good life span out of it. As it is all three show up as new on the meter. They are rotated in order of use .

Wish I could say the same for my laptop .

Likewise, Ray. When I collected my camera the battery was uncharged and the spare I bought also. Could this be something to do with the firmware update, which as you know I had loads of trouble with, although the camera wasn't dead?

Well my camera came with the latest firmware (1.30 i think), however any L-ion deviced I've every bought always has a 'factory charge' in the battery, my understanding being that they would be DOA if they didn't have one. The prime example being that when I put the N-95 into the X100 straight out of the box the camera switched on fine and recognised the battery as having full charge.

I have owned 5 digital cameras - going from a point and shoot to a full frame DSLR. NONE have ever come with charged batteries.

Page iV of the X-100 manual.

The battery is not charged at shipment .

Charge the battery before use.

Keep the battery in it's case when not in use .

Either way the battery is NOT the problem, I can get to the firmware upgrade menu and stay on it for hours with the battery. If it was a battery issue I would not be able to do this.

You said .

i can still use it to power the camera if its plugged into my pc via usb,

Is it possible that the usb cable is supplying power to the camera at that point and not the battery ?

The video shows what happens when there is next to no charge left in a battery . The iris tries to open and when power fails the spring inside returns it to a closed position .

Just want to say thanks for everyones help so far.

With regards to usb power, according to fuji's x100 faq its not possible to power the device from usb. Also I can turn on the camera by holding back to get to the firmware menu, and have been able to remain on it for over and hour without the battery dying. And I have tried to upgrade but it just tells I have the latest version and to turn off the camera.

In that case the the firmware has corrupted on updating and the only thing you can do is send it to the servicing department for resetting .

When initially you said the camera would stay on for hours with the usb lead attached to the PC with the firmware screen coming up it sounded odd.

Updates are normaly done by transfer to the card not being in the camera and then the camera not conected to the PC is used for the firmware update .

At least that's the way I've aways done them as the files have to go from the card to the camera and not the PC to the camera .

That way the file can never accidentally go to the wrong location .

Sorry for misunderstanding your problem .
