How did Paul (Gwalion) do it?
Submitted by Ray Hines on Sat, 04/02/2012 - 18:13
I'm a fool, I deleted the original post.
Many of you have asked how Paul (Gwalion) took his Glass & Bottle shot on Fridays IHC. This is how I thought it was done.. http://diyphotography.net/crossing-over-to-the-dark-field-has-never-been... (EDITED since Paul said it wasn't)
It's really easy, and cheap, to do. All you need is 4 pieces of card and a table lamp. Thats all I used for this pi below. Have a go, you know you want to.
As done on Blue Peter, here's one I did earlier..

If you have a go, put the results here.

I'll be back with a try...
Well here's my try... the best of a bad bunch
will persevere with this.... lol
didn't notice or know about the snoopy light thing till I saw the diagram above, but have made one now so will have another try, I did find the lid to be a bit to bendy so used the brown lid from a 200g coffee jar instead, fits better and more snuggly to the end where the silver bottom use to be.
ps... got the blue colour using metalic craft card from the pound shop, red, gold and silver to try next lol

You could change the glass into a bottle and add a Pringles snoot, and get this..
This was straightened and copy pasted in Photoshop. The edge light is from the rear table lamp and the lable light is from the snoot. The snoot has a piece of black paper rolled tight inserted in the open end and a couple of pieces of tracing paper covering the end. This is then aimed straight at the bottle lable.
You can eat the Pringles whilst you take your photos.

Woof Torres
Is that a black mirror?
This one has the same setup as the bottle above. The snoot is very tight on the marble. This photo has had a little photoshopping done.
Heres the set up

Nobody has asked me how it was done, though David did suggest that I might say how in the IHC and , no, it was not done the way you are describing here. Close but no cigar.

Very interesting Paul. I'd love to know how it was done.

As I said, you were close. I used a softbox ( made from a large cardboard box, some translucent paper and tinfoil, with a hole cut in the back for a flashgun) draped a black cloth down the centre of the box leaving a strip of about 5" on either side. Glass and bottle were just placed on a black cloth in front of the dark background and the rest was just a case of playing around to find the optimal distance and exposure. As you suggest - easy! but isn't everything when you know how?

great setup, Paul.
I do like the homemade equipment approach, you can cut and fiddle with cardboard boxes til its just right, then chuck it way and make another. So much cheaper than buying lightboxes and all.

Nice one Paul, great idea. I'll have to make myself one of them softboxes.
Come on guys and gals have a go yourself. Mine was a table lamp and a Pringles tube, Pauls was a cardboard box and some material. It's fun and a lot easier than you might think.

home made kit is great fun... though to be honest I think you can buy a softbox for less than a tenner on ebay!!

ah but wheres the fun and sense of achievement in buying ready made?
would you rather have a homemade casserole costing about 3 quid and enough for at least two meals or a 4.99p tesco single portion frozen readymade?

i used a cardboard box with black card on the inside. a lamp and some tin foil over a table mat which i moved around to reflect light. no snoot. it took some trial and error with the settings. i used manual mode (HS10), aperture F10 and played with the shutter speed mostly around 1/4 to 1 second. i'll have another go next weekend and maybe try try the white card and background.
