Small f number, blurring background.
Submitted by Dave Bloor on Thu, 30/08/2012 - 13:16
Trying to improve the photo's in my garden using a small f number and getting close to the subject. Also using a little zoom to further blur out the background. One of the results is here; http://www.myfinepix.com/gallery/169862/525243
Thank you

You have not said which model camera you are using but I assume th photo was taken in macro mode. If you are using a compact camera, including a bridge camera, and you have only a choice of two apertures at any zoom level, it is likely that it uses a ND filter to obtain the exposure equivalent of a change of aperture but in fact the physical aperture remains the same. This means that reducing the aperture number has no effect on the depth of field.
The only advice I can give in that case is to wait until there is no movement in your subject as the slightest movement will make a difference to the point of focus. If you can find some means of steadying the camera, for example placing it on a tripod, and prefocus on the place where your subject is expected to be (this can require a lot of patience), that may give you a higher rate of success. With macro shots, the depth of field is so shallow that you need to be extremely careful in focusing and avoid any camera movement when the shutter button is pressed.
