If It's Wierd you want, What the heck caused this
Submitted by Delboy184 on Wed, 24/11/2010 - 12:22
This happened last winter, I leave a bowl of water out for the birds and after a really cold night I get up and find this in the bowl, I couldn't believe what I was looking at and no idea at all as to how or what caused the ice to form this strange column of frozen water. It's triangular in shape and big enough to get my little finger in....
needless to say I looked again the next day, it had tried to do it again, but this time it was just a little mound in the bowl.....Any idea's

You can get similar if warmer water is dripping from above. Either that, or it's the aliens again??

Think it's caused by gaseous bubbles, as the bubbles burst the fine water spray freezes in mid-air. I stand to be corrected but it's my best guess.

The bowl was completely out in the open so nothing had dripped from above, and why the triangular shape... Hmmm think your right Laurie "aliens"

I knew I'd read something about these before, so just looked it up. Here is the science behind the phenomenon http://www.its.caltech.edu/~atomic/snowcrystals/icespikes/icespikes.htm

I tend to agree with Chris's solution, with the addition that, from the photo, it looks as if a steady breeze could have been flowing across the surface which modified the growing crystal spike. That would account for it leaning over away from the direction of breeze.
But I would be content with an alien setting a puzzle to confuse local inhabitants.

I looked at the site Chris linked, it certainly explaind a little. Although they were all spikes not a triangular large hollow columb....
Must look for a science web site that answers questions

Hi snaphappy
I see what your saying but if that was the case it would be a random shape and not the perfect hollow triangle that it was.

What a great image of a very unusual ice formation.
Wikipedia has this explanation......
An ice spike is an upward-facing icicle that forms as a body of water freezes. Ice spikes can form in natural environments or can be made artificially by freezing distilled water in plastic ice cube trays.
Water expands when it freezes. If there already is a thin sheet of surface ice over the body of water, further freezing can force water out and upwards through a crack or weak point in the sheet. This can produce a tube-like structure where water emerges at the tip, progressively lengthening the tube.[1] Tube formation stops when the tip freezes.

It may have started forming as a spike, and then formed in to a triangle due to the wind. As an initial spike it would have created a natural V shaped split in the air passing over it. This would explain the triangle shape, as the vortex created behind the spike, would have drawn the edges back on themselves. If you look at the leading edge, you will see it is thicker than the other corners. The wind passing over the top of the hollow as it grew, would have also assisted in the drawing up of fluid, as it would create a vacuum within the tube. As it also seem to be in a black dish/container, that would have helped keep the water below at a slightly higher temperature too, so helping the process, as the warmer water will rise
