Missed the Cruise Ship (Hospitalised) My Birthday tomorrow.
Today I should have been in Denmark. Instead I am recovering from illness at home. Geoff and myself had booked a Baltic Cruise for my birthday tomorrow (Sunday 13th May) but with just hours before our cruise pick up to take us to our transfer coach, I was taken ill on Wednesday evening and was rushed into hospital by Ambulance. I was admitted to hospital with Kidney problems and spent two nights over the last three days in hospital and was discharged last night. The Cruise ship sailed without us at 4pm Thursday and we had no choice but to cancel our holiday. (we have travel insurance so should be refunded in full) The Dr had said that had I been onboard the Cruise ship then I would have been airlifted off the ship to hospital as I needed very strong intravenous antibiotic drugs to combat the raging problem. The irony was that we had booked our cabin to be near to the Medical room purposely due to our unpredictable health. My White cell count I was told was “an impressive 28” which should have been 4 to 11. I had 7 bags of saline fluid pumped in me which has put 8lb of fluid weight on me! Just when I had worked hard to lose 12lb in the last 12 weeks. I had scans and X-rays and the nursing staff and Drs were brilliant in their response to my serious illness. There was a funny moment while I was half out of it when the Consultant said .. “Well, Alison, it looks like you’ve had a Heart Attack without you knowing it.” Geoff and myself just looked at each other but it would not have surprised me if I had. Then the Consultant asked how long I had being on a certain medication and I looked at him and I said “Have you got the right notes?” to which he replied no. It was the previous patient’s notes who I had literally jumped in her bed the moment she had left and they hadn’t wiped the name board above the bed. It was a relief and a lighter moment. So coincidently as I write this to post on the forum, Celine Dion is singing on the radio ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from the film Titanic.. which has brought a little tear to my eye as it has reminded me that our ship is sailing the seas without us on her 12 day voyage to Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Tallin. So no photoblog to follow and although I am woolly headed, on Antibiotics and have to take it easy for the next three weeks I am thankful to have missed the boat. It will be a very quiet birthday for me tomorrow and I just might watch the Titanic film.

Sorry to hear your news Alison, wow WBC 2.8 now that is extremely low and you would have been wide open to infections with your immune system being compromised. Hope the antibiotics are being kind to you as my Tinkerbell has just undergone a similar problem. She was due her 2nd chemo session but the effects of the 1st had lowered her WBC too low for it proceed and this was last week. It had only built up to 4.8 this week and had to be cancelled yet again which on reflection maybe a good thing as the effect of them there antibiotics don't allow you to stray far from the throne room. But what would we do without hospitals and all the wonderful people that run them. I wish you a speedy recovery and a lovely birthday.

Thanks Angie..no doubt we will book another holiday in a few weeks time maybe on a late deal when I'm fit again. The suitcases are still packed from this one in readiness though I won't need my Ballgown for the Captain's Dinner now. It brought back memories as the Ward I was in was the same building Geoff battled his life....Thanks Paul, Jean and Ian. Thank you Snaphappy. I hope Tinkerbell recovers soon. I don't know how White cells work. I know the Dr was impressed it was 28. Just tried researching about it. All the drugs pumped in me have left me a bit woolly headed but I'm doing well thanks. Thanks again. Alison

So gutted for you. Hope you can still enjoy your birthday (won't ask how old!) and get back to good health quickly.
If you listen to Celine Dion I'm sure she says 'the Hot Dogs go on!'.

Glad they managed to sort you out, Alison. Sounds like you have been through the wringer, so to speak.
Although you have missed your cruise, you will still have a holiday to look forwards to, at least.
Give yourself the time to recover.
Happy birthday for tomorrow.

Bah Humbug that count is zilch! Mr L has a very impressive white count. What a shame Alison, that must have reared it's ugly head quickly. Thank goodness you were given prompt and correct treatment and you will live to tell another tale and sail another day. Best Wishes xx

Thanks for your good wishes Liz, Bob, Bluebottle, Jo, Martyn (gOne) Elaine,Sandra and crissyb.
Thanks Jen for your good wishes. My White Blood cell count was 28 on admission and 12 on discharge. Normal I was told was between 4 to 11. My Temperature hit 39.9 at one stage and the shivers and shakes were bad with low blood pressure. I have a long history of a kidney problem as one is larger than the other and one does not filter as well and my Consultant discussed a Stent operation at one stage but after further tests the kidney filtered better and I was discharged in 2007. I have what I call minor chill attacks four or five times a year which I cope with and normally gets better within 24 hours with soluable tablets and water. I never know when these attacks strike but on Tuesday the tell tale pain began in the back which forced me in bed all day Wednesday until the Ambulance arrived. The Diagnosis on Hospital Discharge was a 'Likely Urosepsis' which apparently is a life threatening emergency. It's just one of a few ailments I live with unfortunately. I hope Mr L is well Jen. Thanks for your message again. Love Alison xx

Thanks Jacquie and Ian for your messages....Thanks Julie, so no Motion on the Ocean for me then. LOL!! Imagine if I'd been on board ship having to be stretchered airlifted by helicopter to a land hospital. Everyone would have been taking photos of me! I'm alot better today thanks. All the Get Well messages are cheering me up and it's my birthday tomorrow so it will be a good day. My sense of humour is shining and been on happy pills is helping me see the brighter side of life.

Hi David. Thanks. I was searching first thing this morning for last minute holiday deals to somewhere in the sun on a beach but will have to wait at least three weeks on Dr's orders. LOL!! I've also been looking through all my cruise photos...oh, well never mind. I'd rather be at home than in a foreign hospital. Been there, done that and got the tee-shirt

Hi Alison,
Just switched on my computer and saw this... how traumatic it all must have been. I know it's a bit of a cliche, but at least you're ok and you can have a holiday at any time. Health is so much more important. What a drama it would have been if you had been air-lifted off the boat.
Hope your recovery goes well... and please don't rush to do things. Just take care and try to have a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY..... it'll definitely be one to remember...
.
Be thinking about you..

Ha ha ...LOL! Marion.. I was thinking the same. Just think I would have had a birds eye view looking down on to the cruise ship with all the passengers looking up taking photos of the helicopter. What a shot! What a picture! Yes, for one moment I had thought about the scenerio. Missing the boat ~ A blessing me thinks

Cheers Nigel, thanks for your lovely message. Now come on you know me. We are on holiday in September in Gran Canaria (if I'm not ill) so unfortunately cannot be with you at Slimbridge. Maybe we can meet at Wales sometime in the future again. Our paths will cross again be sure of that, besides I need you to show me those settings again for the slow shutter speed on the light orbs. LOL!! I've forgotten! Thanks Nigel. Say hi to Sharon for me. Alison x

Hi Alison,
Pleased to hear you are on the mend, and sounding your usual upbeat self. The Baltic will be waiting for you when you feel like booking the trip again. You'll need your strength, what with the walking and photographic opportunities round every corner! We spent two days in St Petersburg, which was still not enough time to capture the incredible city. I hope you have lovely birthday, happy at home and getting stronger all the time. Love Jane x
